This stunning trip is carefully timed with the tides, allowing you to experience the Abel Tasman’s Marine Reserve at its absolute best.

As mother nature ebbs and flows, so too does this dynamic journey—delivering a rich, ever-changing adventure along the coast.

Explore tidal inlets alive with movement and marine life. The park’s sculpted granite coastline provides the perfect environment for sea creatures large and small, and offers a truly immersive paddling experience. Abel Tasman Kayaks is one of just three operators authorised to view marine mammals from sea kayaks at Tonga Island—giving you an exclusive opportunity to observe NZ fur seals (kekeno) in their natural habitat.

This is our premier one-day kayaking experience, shaped by the rhythm of the tides—offering the very best of the Abel Tasman’s natural beauty and wildlife encounters.

We offer two route options based on the tide:

Start: Awaroa | Finish: Bark Bay
Begin your day with a water taxi ride to Awaroa, where your kayak journey kicks off with a visit to Shag Harbour*—a secluded tidal inlet unlike any other in the park. Paddle south through the Tonga Island Marine Reserve, where you’ll encounter playful seals and dramatic coastal scenery. Stop for a picnic lunch on a golden beach, then continue to Tonga Arches and the calm lagoons that define the heart of the park, finishing your trip at Bark Bay.

Start Onetahuti/Finish Anchorage

Paddle from Onetahuti out to Tonga Island to see New Zealand fur Seals, Kekeno.  Paddle south with the breeze, exploring sculptured granite headlands, tranquil lagoons and everything that’s special about the heart of the Abel Tasman. Enjoy lunch at this beach, before heading to Anchorage. Finish at Anchorage and return to Mārahau by water taxi.

Start: Onetahuti | Finish: Anchorage
Launch from Onetahuti and paddle out to Tonga Island to see kekeno up close, before continuing south with the breeze at your back. Discover headlands carved by time, peaceful lagoons, and vibrant coastal life. After a beachside lunch, paddle on to Anchorage, where your adventure concludes with a scenic water taxi ride back to Mārahau.

All of our trips are supported from our purpose-built kayak base, where you’ll have access to complimentary hot showers, Wi-Fi, secure gear storage and carparking, and client transport services. We provide top-quality soft gear, expertly fitted by our guides, along with top-quality kayaks and equipment tailored for your comfort and safety—so you can focus on enjoying the experience.

On this trip covering the Tonga Island Marine Reserve coastline your  professional guide will be with you for around 8 hours sharing stories, local knowledge, and their love for this incredible place – the Abel Tasman. We cater morning tea and lunch designed around your health and energy.

What our customers say

It was amazing

mathilde

Marcella

We had a wonderful day on the kayaks. Ed was a fantastic host who provided us with a lot of interesting information about the national park We would definitely recommend this tour

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Absolutely outstanding experience with Abel Tasman Kayaks! From start to finish, everything was smooth, professional, and full of adventure. The equipment was top quality and easy to use, and the kayak routes took us through some of the most breathtaking scenery I’ve ever seen — golden beaches, crystal clear water, and hidden coves that felt like a private paradise.

The staff were friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about the area, giving great tips and making everyone feel safe and welcome. Whether you’re doing a self-guided day trip or a multi-day adventure, they’ve thought of everything you need for an unforgettable time on the water.

Amazing experience, highly recommend to anyone visiting Abel Tasman National Park! Can’t wait to come back and paddle another route.

Also, they recommended the best Glow Worm experience… check out our review for them!

Michael Harlow

We had a full day kayak tour, kayaking from Onetahuti beach to Anchorage. We had an amazing day, seeing dolphins, sting rays, seals, penguins and birds such as weka and kaka. Our tour guide, Ed, planned an excellent route for us and tailored it the group's preferences and the weather conditions. He was friendly, knowledgeable about the area and was a great guide for novice sea kayakers. He took the day at our pace but we also had the opportunity to try kayak sailing (which was a very fun experience) and exploring the tidal lagoon at Torrent Bay. Thanks Ed for making it such a special day!

Kasturi Pindar

I went on the remote marine reserve kayak tour and WOW was it a tour of a lifetime!

Though the weather conditions weren’t Instagram perfect it was an amazing experience, during the tour I saw a seal, a penguin swimming beside us, along with a variety of birds. We learnt how to sail waves

My guide, Henry, could not have been better. It was like hanging out with a buddy you haven’t seen in a long time that is super knowledgeable about Able Tasman and made you feel safe as you were kayaking through the bay. He didn’t make it feel like a scripted tour but, rather a group of people hanging out and having a good time

I’d easily go back and do another tour. Thank you for the amazing experience, Henry (and the rest of the Able Tasman Kayak crew)!

At high tide they rise like little islands; at low tide they reveal hidden channels and textures that make this coastline endlessly interesting.
