If you’re looking for the iconic kiwi adventure, then look no further than a classic, spend three days kayaking the coastline from beautiful Totaranui/Awaroa in the North down to the golden shores of Marahau.

Our classic trips serve up everything that is special about the Abel Tasman National Park. Treat yourself to memories you’ll cherish for life. This fully outfitted adventure has long been the benchmark for overnight guided kayak adventures in New Zealand. There will be no better time to experience it than this summer. Summers call for lasting memories, and our Classics do just that.

Spacious and spectacular, the northern section is seldom visited by others. Completely immerse yourself in the natural wonders of the Abel Tasman National Park. Experience it all from paddling with seals, relaxing on numerous beaches, exploring lagoons, islands and Maori village Pa sites, to learning about local history and lore. Be wowed by the night sky, the milky way is truly amazing in the park. Enjoy drifting off to sleep listening to the waves before waking up to hear bird song. It’s a relaxing, content-rich guided kayak and camping experience, fully catered with food.

If you want to explore the quiet far north of the park and walk from Totaranui to Separation Point (return) contact us and we can make this into a four day journey. Your first day will be an unguided walk passing lush tropical native forest and quiet beaches on day two meet your guide to start the three day classic.  It is a lot quieter up here and we recommend staying at what we consider some of the best campsites in the park. Recommended campsites: Anapai or Totaranaui.

Kirsten from Bearfoot Theory blogged about our Classic trips read her personal account of her trip with Abel Tasman Kayaks. You can also view her journey from her video below.

Paddling is our business, with all activities supported by our purpose-built kayak base, free hot showers, free wifi, free equipment storage & client transporters. We also provide high-quality soft gear – fitted for each client by our guides and high-quality hard gear – customised for comfort for each client.

On this trip covering the coastline from Totaranui or Awaroa and surrounds to Marahau you have a professional guide with you for 3 days sharing their knowledge and passion of the Abel Tasman. We also cater all meals designed around your health and energy prepared onsite by our container cafe. We offer a complimentary return bus transfer from Nelson/Motueka with Classic bookings.

Every trip is unique like each of our clients.

We have set a summer schedule but are flexible outside our Tues/Sat departures, please contact us directly for alternate dates.

What our customers say

My husband and I did the 2-Day Classic kayaking tour with ATK. It was a tremendous highlight of our trip! We were led by Liana who was a wonderful, knowledgeable and highly skilled facilitator. She was professional and engaging from beginning to end. Her knowledge of the surroundings was very impressive - she could spot animals from very far away and knew loads about each one! There was no shortage... read more

This was a beautiful way to experience Abel Tasman and get close to the wildlife in the area. I did a tour that went the full day. We ended up doing good 4h of active kayaking, broken up by lunch and a few other stops. Gear and snacks/lunch were super tasty and the guides even packed up hot drinks (tea/coffee) for the beach. We had great sunny weather but it... read more

I did the 3 day tiki tour as a solo female traveller and found it an amazing experience. Everything was well organised and I had great communication from Abel Tasman Kayaks in relation to my questions prior to and post booking. Each staff member I dealt with was great from those who were emailing me back, those at their base, those who did the water taxi driving and those who... read more

We booked the Park Start which is a 3 day and 2 night trip which starts by taking a water taxi up to the Northern part of the National park where you’re dropped off enabling you to kayak back to Marahau with the wind behind you! The kayaks are spacious with lots of room for tent, other camping equipment and clothes for the trip, and the compartments in the boat... read more

My wife and I just returned from a 2 day trip with ATK - we started our adventure in Marahau and took a 40 minute water taxi up the coast to Awaroa. We’d have loved to do the 3 day trip which covers the same coastline but includes a few nature walks a however, we were NOT disappointed by the truncated experience. We were paired off with one other... read more

TimRowesays

Sea kayaking for the first time, I opted for a short introductory half day. It was beautiful, fun and rewarding. The guides were excellent, group "sailing" was an unexpected fun activity that saved energy and lunch on the beach after was tasty, filling and relaxing. Water taxi back including being towed (while still in the boat) by a tractor.
