Catch a water taxi to Totaranui before walking South.
Experience the coastline by water before walking back to Marahau.
The Abel Tasman Coastal track is part of New Zealand’s great walk network. Its’ famous for its access to it’s many golden beaches and the native forest fringing the granite coastline. It is unique, in that every ‘section’ of the coastal track offers multiple opportunities to stop off at golden sand beaches and other coastal highlights, in fact certain sections of the coastal track are the stunning sweeping golden beaches.
Walking in the park is generally broken into the following sections Marahau to Observation, Observation to Anchorage, Anchorage to Bark Bay, Bark Bay to Onetahhuti, Onetahuti to Awaroa and Awaroa to Totaranui.
Each section is roughly 2 – 4 hours of walking on a well formed track.
The Abel Tasman is part of New Zealand’s great walk network and this premier track is designed for all levels of fitness. An outline of the journey is below. DoC’s full track brochure can be downloaded here.

Environment Access Fee
Your trip includes an Environmental Access Fee which goes directly towards preserving the Abel Tasman National Park.
A portion of your ticket price goes directly towards preserving the unique environment you will enjoy on your trip in the Abel Tasman. This includes the compulsory concession fees paid to the Department of Conversation as well as voluntary contributions to local organisations and projects to improve the environment, ecology and access to the National Park. Fees are adjusted according to your trip, you can see your contribution when you purchase a ticket.

Do I need hiking boots?
For walking the track, firm footwear is required, but boots are not essential, walking sandals or sports shoes are fine.

We had one day of guided kayaking with a fantastic guide teaching us useful skills and telling insightful stories. The highlights were raft sailing and silence in Shag Harbour. And a box of biscuits, my 12 year old would add! It has been a great introduction revealing how much is still left for the next visit. read less

Wel vroeg verzamelen. Maar dat maakt de dag alleen maar mooier. Na een goede uitleg over de veiligheidsregels, kon er niets fout gaan. Het kajakken duurde 3 uur maar was meer dan de moeite waard en ging op een gemakkelijk tempo. Veel dieren gezien waaronder kleine zeehonden en bijzondere vogels. ATK is always fun to work with the teams have a great sense of humour and make the day a positive and highly personable experience from the moment you check-in. to the moment you leave. In other words, is a classic Kiwi experience. However, that is tempered with providing timely instruction reminding you subtly that adventure activities need everyone involved to manage risk and respect those risks.
The soul food excursion is very clever you work your way around islands noiselessly so surprise surprise the wildlife doesn't disappear as it does when confronted with diesel engines and jet boats.
The coastline is fascinating and an experienced guide like Tim puts you in the right place at low tide and high tide and anywhere in between at the optimum moment.
Kayaking 15 K is tiring and it's great to stop on a Beach and enjoy a generous lunch and the classic Kiwi sandwich experience not to mention naughty brownies and chocolate truffles!
it's easy not to cover the basics but the start and finish are executed with great efficiency so you get into the trip quickly and get off home quickly which enables the really memorable part to stay in your mind.

Very good briefing to ensure safety etc. Guide was clear and humorous and had lots of knowledge of natural history to make things interesting. Lunch on beach very good, coffee and fruit too. Beautiful coastline and weather was great. We walked back along Able Tasman path, really good. Great way to spend 4-5 hours! Would fully recommend.

Great trip with Reed. All the equipment is very good quality, we were well briefed and looked after. We saw lots of birds and seals and even a ray. Our instructor Reed was excellent and very knowledgeable. Highly recommend
