The Abel Tasman Coastal track is part of New Zealand’s great walk network. Its’ famous for its access to it’s many golden beaches and the native forest fringing the granite coastline. It is unique, in that every ‘section’ of the coastal track offers multiple opportunities to stop off at golden sand beaches and other coastal highlights, in fact certain sections of the coastal track are the stunning sweeping golden beaches.

Walking in the park is generally broken into the following sections Mārahau to Observation, Observation to Anchorage, Anchorage to Bark Bay, Bark Bay to Onetahhuti, Onetahuti to Awaroa and Awaroa to Totaranui.

Each section is roughly 2 – 4 hours of walking on a well formed track.

The Abel Tasman is part of New Zealand’s great walk network and this premier track is designed for all levels of fitness. An outline of the journey is below. DoC’s full track brochure can be downloaded here.

 

  • Check-in: 8.30am
  • Open: 1 Oct – 30 Apr
  • Age: Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult on a 1:1 ratio
  • Food: Lunch can be provided for $25pp or bring your own
  • Abel Tasman Great Walk: Approximately 3 – 4 hours
  • Water Taxi: One water taxi cruise
  • Bus: $80 Nelson return, $40 Motueka return operating 1 Oct – 30 Apr. On request outside of these times

    Your trip includes an Environmental Access Fee which goes directly towards preserving the Abel Tasman National Park.

    A portion of your ticket price goes directly towards preserving the unique environment you will enjoy on your trip in the Abel Tasman. This includes the compulsory concession fees paid to the Department of Conversation as well as voluntary contributions to local organisations and projects to improve the environment, ecology and access to the National Park.  Fees are adjusted according to your trip, you can see your contribution when you purchase a ticket.

  • Do I need hiking boots?

    For walking the track, firm footwear is required, but boots are not essential, walking sandals or sports shoes are fine.

Ik heb genoten van het eerste gedeelte, de eigen hike op de Abel Tasman Coast Track naar Observation beach, met al die prachtige viewpoints. Daarna een heerlijke lunch aan het water, om vervolgens na goede instructies van jonge guide Sam, met de Kayak langs de stranden en baaien terug te peddelen. We hadden ineens even slecht weer waardoor hij ons heel verstandig snel naar main land bracht. Gelukkig knapte het op en hebben we lekker in de zon verder kunnen kayakken. Misschien een beetje duur, maar het is zeer de moeite waard!
